Volume 1 covers his professional life from the age of 28 in 1951 to the age of 51 in 1974. It was during this period that Gertler co-ordinated the Niagara Escarpment Study, commissioned by then-Premier John Robarts. This study lead to the passing of the Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act in 1973 and the Niagara Escarpment Plan in 1985.
