Watchdogging the NECOne of CONE's most important responsibilities is as the watchdog for the Niagara Escarpment Plan (NEP). CONE is a strong supporter of the NEP and believes that the NEP will, if implemented properly, do a good job protecting the Niagara Escarpment and preventing inappropriate development. To ensure that the NEP is implemented properly, CONE monitors the performance of the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC), the provincial agency that is responsible for NEP implementation. The NEC meets once each month, usually in Georgetown, to make decisions on applications for development permits from landowners in the Niagara Escarpment Plan Area. CONE volunteers attend all of these NEC meetings to monitor their decisions
and performance. The information collected is used to produce a biannual
NEC Report Card.
Please click here if you are interested in volunteering as an NEC monitor. Monitors do not have to be experts in land use planning policy, although some familiarity with the Niagara Escarpment Plan is beneficial. You will attend the day-long meeting and submit a brief standardized report back to the CONE office. For your first meeting you will be joined by an experienced CONE monitor.
